Issues Caused By Moths

There are over 2500 different species of moths found in the UK, and most of them don’t cause any issues for humans. However, several species are considered pests, and while they don’t spread diseases, bite humans or cause health issues like some insects, such as bed bugs or fleas, they can still become an irritating pest problem.

The most common pest moths are common clothes moths, or case-bearing clothes moths. Often known as clothes or carpet moths, these moths eat natural materials and fibres, meaning they can cause significant damage to homes and commercial properties, particularly hospitality providers and museums. There is also the Indian meal moth, which is often called the pantry moth due to its preference for dried foods. These pests can be an issue for homes and food preparation areas in commercial premises, as they contaminate food.

While a few moths might not seem like a big issue, female moths can lay between 50 and 400 eggs in her lifetime, and these can quickly hatch to become moth larvae.

While adult moths are the ones most people notice, it’s the larvae that are the most destructive, as they need to eat a lot to pupate and become adults. As such, it’s crucial that you act fast if you notice any bare patches or holes in clothing or fabrics throughout your property, or if you see moths in your cupboards and food containers.
